Notably gay marriage is an important legal right because it confers assurance of shared legal custody of adoptees, tax and insurance benefits, and quite notably, the ability to visit your partner as a legal spouse in the hospital without jumping through hoops. I wonder why gay men would have a vested interest in those rights hmmmm!!!

Banning discrimination in military service is also a huge step for employer non-discrimination abd the establishment of sexuality and gender identity as protected classes, not just because of the to this day horrifying amounts of sexual abuse in the DOD, including corrective or "punitive" rapes & gay bashings by fellow soldiers + cover ups by higher ranking individuals, but also because the military is a federal government employer. It's not your state, it's not a corporation. If you establish precedent on the federal level for employee rights of any kind, that's a big deal.

There's a lot to be said negatively AND accurately about the US military as a whole. And there's a lot to be said about '00s respectability politics— though if you weren't there, and you didn't experience the hyperpolicing fascism of the era on top of the far more socially acceptable bigotry AND outright violence towards minority communities, I need you to be quiet about how "boring" people trying to survive in safety are & were, in a less safe time & place. But the abolishment of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" is not a point against the fight for gay rights & social progress in labor.
